Social and Emotional Wellbeing

Jogo Behaviour Support believes that enhancing the social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people will enable to them to reach not only their academic potential but their overall potential.

As stated by Nice (2008):

“Good social, emotional and psychological health helps protect children against emotional and behavioural problems, violence and crime, teenage pregnancy and the misuse of drugs and alcohol (‘Systematic review of the effectiveness of interventions to promote mental wellbeing in children in primary education’ Adi et al. 2007).”*

Often children and young people will display their social and emotional distress through their behaviour and Jogo Behaviour Support believes that we need to look underneath the behaviour to find the root cause.

“Since the child is a social being, his (her) strongest motivation is the desire to belong.”  Dreikurs, R. Children the Challenge. New York: Hawthorne Books, 1964, p. 14.

As stated above, humans are social beings and we are biologically required to be socially connected to others. Without connecting with others, as babies we would not survive, but as we develop we also need to connect to be able to work within a group setting in the classroom or workplace.

For a long time we have known the importance of social skills development and now it is backed up with the increasing neurological evidence about the need for positive social interactions and relationships to help develop the brain.

"An understanding heart is everything in a teacher, and cannot be esteemed highly enough. One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feeling. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child." ~ Carl Gustav Jung

There are currently 850,000 children and young people in UK who have been diagnosed with a mental health difficulty.  (Young Minds, 2012) However we know that this is only the tip of the iceberg as there is many more whose social and emotional wellbeing is underdeveloped.
